Press Release
President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive investigation into the recent fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano, following widespread destruction of goods and shops belonging to traders.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President sympathised with affected traders and residents over the incident, which reportedly began on Saturday evening and burned into Sunday morning, severely impacting the popular food market.
Tinubu described the incident as tragic and worrying, noting that it occurred less than two weeks after a previous fire disaster destroyed dozens of shops and property in the same market.
According to the statement, the President had earlier contacted Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to obtain a detailed situation report and assess the scale of damage caused by the blaze.
He subsequently ordered a full-scale probe into the repeated market fires, stressing the need to determine the root causes and recommend preventive measures to stop future occurrences that continue to leave traders counting heavy losses.
Tinubu also expressed solidarity with victims and urged relevant emergency and regulatory agencies to strengthen safety enforcement and fire-prevention standards across major markets nationwide.
