A senatorial hopeful for Benue South, Dr. David Olofu, has called on the Federal Government to take decisive and urgent action against the persistent attacks by suspected herdsmen in the region.
The attacks have claimed numerous lives and displaced communities, with recent incidents in Anwule-Oglewu and Rijo communities leaving several people dead and property destroyed.
Olofu, who is vying for the Benue South Senatorial seat on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2027, expressed deep concern over the situation, describing it as “unacceptable” and urging the government to exhibit a heightened sense of seriousness and purpose in tackling the menace.
He added that the attacks have sparked widespread fear and displacement, with many communities living in constant terror.
He appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate relief materials to affected communities and urged the Benue State government to demonstrate greater concern and commitment in addressing the crisis.
He proposed the construction of a strategic highway along the River Benue corridor to improve security and facilitate economic activities.
He has also advocated for community-led security initiatives, urging youths and able-bodied men to form vigilante groups to protect their localities.
The situation in Benue South remains dire, with reports of ongoing attacks and displacement. The Federal Government is urged to take immediate action to address the crisis and ensure the safety of citizens
