In a bid to promote climate action and sustainability, the centre for climate change and adaptation, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto , (UDUS) has donated 1,000 tree seedlings to university-based unions and local communities.
The donation was which was made by the University’s Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, in collaboration with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The event, which took place at the University’s campus, was attended by representatives of the beneficiary unions and groups, as well as top officials of the University. According to Professor Adamu Aliyu Aliero, Director of the Centre and National President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria, the donation is part of the Centre’s mandate to promote inclusive climate action.
“Human survival is increasingly endangered by climate change, and Sokoto – one of the most vulnerable states in Nigeria – must take urgent action,” Professor Aliero emphasized. “Tree planting is not just important; it is essential. It helps to mitigate the effects of climate change, improves air quality, and supports biodiversity.”
The beneficiaries of the initiative include the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union, and National Association of Academic Technologists, as well as two environmental groups: the Make Sokoto Green Initiative and the Selfless Impact Foundation.
In his remarks, the vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Malami Muhammad Maishanu, commended the Centre for its timely intervention and urged it to sustain and expand its climate action initiatives.
“The University is committed to promoting sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint,” Professor Maishanu said. “We will continue to support initiatives that promote climate action and sustainability.”
Representatives of the beneficiary unions and groups praised the University management for its foresight and commitment to climate-resilient initiatives. They pledged to collaborate for broader climate action and ensure the successful planting and maintenance of the tree seedlings.
The donation of tree seedlings is part of the University’s efforts to promote sustainability and reduce its environmental impact. The University has also implemented other initiatives, such as energy-efficient lighting, waste recycling, and sustainable transportation.
The event was also attended by Dr. Bashir Saidu, ASUU Vice Chairman; Abubakar Ibrahim, SSANU Chairman; and representatives of NASU and NAAT.
