The Katsina State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged killing of a 400-level student of the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA), Sa’idu Abdulkadir, after a violent protest by students of the institution.

Abdulkadir, was alleged to have been shot dead by a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) while on a motorcycle at Ungwan Kashe Naira in Dutsinma metropolitan area on Sunday morning.

A motorcyclist who was conveying the slain student was also shot by the JTF, and he is said to have been responding to treatment at the Dutsinma General Hospital.

The death of the Forestry and Wildlife Management student sparked violent protest in the institution by his colleagues who blocked and burnt tyres on the ever-busy Dutsinma-Katsina highway.

But the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, said the command has commenced investigation to unravelled the circumstances that lead to the death of the student.

He said: “The Katsina Police Command has commenced an investigation into a shooting incident involving a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).

“The incident resulted in the injury of an okada rider and the death of a 400-level student of the Federal University Dutsinma.

“Preliminary reports indicate that on February 23rd, 2025, at approximately 11:26 am, a commercial motorcycle rider conveying a passenger, Sa’idu Abdulkadir, was flagged down by a team of CJTF members in a Hilux vehicle. One of the JTF members fired at the victims, causing gunshot injuries.

“Detectives promptly responded to the scene and rushed the victims to Dutsinma General Hospital. Sa’idu was later referred to the Orthopedic Hospital, Katsina, where he was certified dead on arrival.”

Aliyu said the command was working with the management of the institution and other critical stakeholders to arrest the suspects for justice to be served.

Meanwhile, the management of FUDMA has shut its campus after the protest that erupted in the institution over the death of the 400-level student.

In a statement on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Armaya’u Hamisu Bichi, announced the immediate closure of the varsity in order to maintain law and order.

He directed all students of the institution to vacate its campus before 6:00 p.m on Monday, February 24, 2025.

“The students are to proceed on one-week mid-semester break starting from Monday 24th. The students are to leave campus before 6.00 pm today (Monday)”, the statement added.
