The University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has expelled 28 students and withdrawn the certificates of 15 former students over various disciplinary offences.
The decision was approved at the 191st Regular Meeting of the University’s Senate after it considered the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC),
This was revealed in a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information, Dr. Habib Yakoob.
The statement disclosed that the affected students were found guilty of offences including threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results, and failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.
It said the senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates belonging to 15 former students who failed to honour multiple invitations extended to them by the disciplinary committee.
Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing following investigations, while 33 others received warnings for infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.
The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment.
He stressed that the University would continue to enforce its rules and regulations without compromise.
