Tinubu Congratulates Kano Gov on 63rd Birthday Amid Defection Rumour

By Our Correspondent

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State as he marks his 63rd birthday, even as persistent rumours swirl about the governor’s possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described Governor Yusuf as a leader of integrity, humility and commitment to public service.

The president applauded the governor’s performance since his election in 2023 under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), noting progressive initiatives in infrastructure and education across Kano State.

Tinubu said Yusuf’s leadership echoes the ethos of grassroots empowerment and the historic tradition of progressive politics in Kano.

He highlighted the governor’s urban renewal programmes, the construction of key road networks—including the five-kilometre road project in each local government area—and the state’s education emergency declaration, which has reportedly seen improved student performance in NECO examinations.

He said, “We rejoice with Governor Yusuf on this special day and commend his dedication to uplifting the welfare of Kano’s people,” wishing him long life and continued success in his public service journey.

Defection Rumours in the Spotlight

But Tinubu’s congratulatory message comes amid speculation within political circles that Governor Yusuf may be planning to leave the NNPP for the ruling APC, a move that, if realised, would represent a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers say such a defection could alter the balance of political influence in the North and bolster the APC’s prospects nationally.

While Governor Yusuf has not publicly confirmed any intention to defect, sources within Kano’s political landscape suggest the governor has been in discussions with federal lawmakers and APC stakeholders in recent months.

Rumours of his potential switch have generated intense interest among party supporters and political analysts alike.

Political Stakes Ahead

If Yusuf eventually joins the APC, it would mark another high-profile defection at a time when party realignments are intensifying across Nigeria’s political terrain.

Such developments could have implications for both state and national elections, including alliances, campaign strategies and voter dynamics.

For now, the birthday message from the nation’s president signals at least a public reconciliation between the federal leadership and the Kano governor, even as political watchers continue to monitor the governor’s next move on the national stage.
