Bala Bello Tinka, the Governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Gombe State says his government will be deliberate in addressing street crime in its first two months in office if elected.
Addressing supporters and residents across Gombe metropolis Tuesday evening, Tinka said if elected, he would lift the restrictions on ‘Okada’ operations, subject to appropriate safety and regulatory measures.
The pronouncement attracted thunderous applause and Bala Tinka asded that the action is intended to allow operators to resume full-time services across the State.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya had in June 2025 imposed a night time restriction on commercial motorcycle operations popularly known as ‘achaba’ in Gombe metropolis and environs from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM to address security concerns.
The action has continued to attract mixed reactions as opponents of the action are counting losses of their businesses as many had been forced to close down.
Bala Bello said, “within the first two months of assuming office, we will take firm measures to tackle street crime, particularly the activities of criminals who snatch mobile phones and handbags from residents, motorists and pedestrians”.
He specifically promised to restore 24-hour Achaba operations, arguing that thousands of young people and some elderly persons alike depend on the business for their livelihoods, while many residents rely on commercial motorcycles for transportation, particularly during late hours.
The ADC candidate outlined key priorities that would guide the early months of his administration, saying he would take decisive action against phone and handbag snatching if elected Governor.
According to him, residents should move freely within their communities without fear of criminal attacks, adding that his administration would strengthen security efforts and work closely with relevant security agencies and community stakeholders to address street-level crime.
Tinka also reiterated his commitment to free education from primary school through university, saying the policy would ensure that children from poor and less privileged families are not denied educational opportunities because of financial constraints.
He said investing in education would give young people more opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to Gombe State’s development.
He urged residents of Gombe metropolis and environs to support the ADC in 2027, saying his administration would focus on practical policies aimed at addressing the everyday challenges confronting the people.
