The remains of the Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, arrived in Nigeria on Monday from India, where he died last week after a prolonged illness.
The late lawmaker’s body was received by a delegation of political associates, family members, and sympathisers, led by a former Governor of Nasarawa State and close ally, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.
Others present at the reception included the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo; the party’s Acting National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe; and a ranking member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Gbefwi Jonathan Gaza.
Senator Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 52, in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Until his death, Akwashiki was a prominent figure in Nasarawa State politics and a serving senator on the platform of the Social Democratic Party.
Colleagues and party leaders have described him as a committed public servant whose contributions to legislative work and constituency development will be deeply missed.
Details of burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in consultation with relevant authorities.
