The Labour Party (LP) in Sokoto State concluded its state congress on Saturday, electing Comrade Yawale Abubakar as the new state chairman.
The event, held at the party’s headquarters, drew delegates from all 23 local government areas, filling the venue with a sea of red‑white‑green flags and hopeful chants.
In a ceremony attended by party officials, and local dignitaries, Abubakar was declared the consensus candidate after a vote that complied with the LP’s constitution.
During his acceptance speech, the newly installed chairman pledged to “sack the All Progressives Congress (APC) misrule” not only in Sokoto but across the country, framing the LP as the vehicle for change after years of perceived neglect.
He told a cheering crowd that the APC‑led government had “inflicted poverty and insecurity” on the state, citing rising food prices, unemployment and a surge in banditry that has displaced many farming communities.
Abubakar also took aim at governors who have recently defected to the APC, accusing them of pursuing “selfish interests” and warning that such moves would not deter the LP’s mission.
The new chairman referenced the party’s electoral successes in 2023, noting that presidential candidate Peter Obi had made strong showings in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory.
“If Obi can break the APC’s stronghold in those bastions, we can repeat that streak here in Sokoto,” he declared, drawing enthusiastic applause from delegates.
He added that the new executive would focus on grassroots mobilisation, policy advocacy and strengthening the party’s presence in rural areas.
He also announced plans to launch a statewide campaign to highlight what the party describes as the APC’s failures in governance and to present the LP’s alternative vision.
The new chairman’s speech was punctuated by chants of “LP forever” and the waving of party flags, reflecting the enthusiasm of supporters eager for a political alternative.
The Labour Party’s state congress in Sokoto marks a significant moment for the opposition, as it seeks to capitalise on public discontent and position itself as a credible challenger in the upcoming electoral cycle.
Alongside Abubakar, the congress elected a full slate of officers. Vice Chairman Alhaji Saidu Ahmad Mu, Deputy Chairman (North) Mallam Ladan Muham, Deputy Chairman (South‑East) Dr. Ibrahim Lawal Isa, Deputy Chairman (South‑South) Abdullahi Muhammad, and Deputy Chairman (Bello Garba Gwadabaw) were among those sworn in.
Others are Deputy Chairman (Female) Hajiya Maryam Sani, State Secretary Hon. Nura Abubakar, Assistant Secretary I Yusuf Abubakar, Assistant Secretary II Alhaji Nasiru Aminu, State Financial Secretary Alhaji Attahiru Abubakar, and State Organising Secretary Hon. Jamilu Adamu.
