The Sokoto State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep sympathy to the people affected by the recent flooding caused by the Goronyo Dam.
The devastating impact of the flood has resulted in loss of lives, property damage, and displacement of communities downstream.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the PDP called for immediate provision of emergency food supplies, shelter, and essential necessities to the displaced persons.
The party also urged the deployment of medical teams to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases and provide treatment to those affected.
Furthermore, the PDP emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of damaged infrastructure, including roads, schools, and farmlands.
The party also called for support to be provided to affected farmers, including seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs.
To prevent the recurrence of such disasters, the PDP advocated for urgent desilting and maintenance of the Goronyo and Bakolori dams.
The statement also stressed the importance of implementing flood control measures, such as early warning systems and evacuation plans.
The PDP urged the Federal Government, Sokoto State Government, and relevant local government areas to take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the flooding.
The party also called on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders to provide assistance to the victims.
The statement emphasized the need for prompt action to mitigate the effects of the flooding and restore normalcy to the affected communities.
