Encomiums As Lado, Wife Bag Chieftaincy Titles in Ekiti

By Ibrahim Aliyu, Katsina

The rich cultural landscape of Ekiti State, renowned for its reverence for tradition and appreciation for benefactors, recently added a prominent political figure to its roll of honour. Senator Yakubu Lado, a former legislator who represented Katsina South Senatorial District, was conferred with a major traditional title, the Aare Atunluse of Iyin Kingdom in Ekiti State.

Lado’s beloved, dedicated, committed and industrious wife, Hajiya Zainab Abacha Lado was also conferred with a revered chieftaincy title of Yeye Aare Atunluse of Iyin Kingdom because of her numerous supportive roles to her husband and the society at large.

The chieftaincy titles bestowed on Lado and his wife by Iyin Kingdom in far away Ekiti State served as a strong statement of non-tribalism and an encouragement for pan-Nigerian collaboration for growth and development.

This conferment, a testament to Lado’s philanthropic outreach and commitment to community development that transcends geo-political boundaries, took place during the colourful Iyin Day 2025 celebration and the fifth coronation anniversary of the Oluyin of Iyin Kingdom, Oba Adeola Ajakaye.

The title, Aare Atunluse, is highly significant in Yoruba tradition, as it translates to the “Pillar of Development” or “Chief who Restores and Develops.” It is an honorary title bestowed by a traditional ruler upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional zeal and commitment to the socio-economic advancement of the community.

In conferring this title upon Senator Yakubu Lado, a notable figure from the Northern part of Nigeria, the Oluyin of Iyin Kingdom, Oba Adeola Ajakaye, underscored a philosophy of national unity and a recognition that contributions to local development should be celebrated regardless of the benefactor’s origin.

While Senator Lado’s humanitarian and development activities across Nigeria are generally acknowledged, the specific and primary catalyst for the Ekiti chieftaincy title was his substantial support for the Iyin Development Fundraising initiative and other humanitarian services.

The Iyin Kingdom launched a massive ₦1 Billion development fund aimed at financing critical infrastructural projects within the community. The kingdom nominated Lado as the Chief Launcher of the fundraising where he donated a whopping sum of N200 million.

As if this was not enough or adequate, Lado’s friends and associates willingly donated N20 million, while his life-saving foundation christened: Lado Development Foundation, pledged free education for all indigenes of the kingdom from primary to university level for a period of five years.

His selection and installation as the new Aare Atunluse of Iyin Kingdom was a clear nod to his significant financial backing and mobilisation efforts for the fund during the launch of this ambitious project.

Speaking at the event, Senator Lado framed the fundraising not just as a financial endeavour but as a tool to “raise the collective consciousness, expand ambitions and build a legacy of shared prosperity.

“This launching is not merely about mobilising financial resources but about raising the collective consciousness, expanding ambitions and building a legacy of shared prosperity.”

His words demonstrated a commitment that went beyond a mere donation, signalling a long-term dedication to the town’s progress. The ceremony was a high-profile event that drew dignitaries from across the country, further emphasizing the national significance of the honour.

The presence of figures like the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibril, and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (who was also honoured), highlighted the bipartisan and national appreciation for community development efforts.

In his remarks, the Oluyin of Iyin Kingdom, Oba Adeola Ajakaye, emphasized that Lado was chosen for his proven contributions to the development of the community and the nation at large, cementing his recognition as a Pan-Nigerian champion of development.

However, Lado’s declaration at the event moved his action beyond mere transactional philanthropy into the realm of true humanitarian leadership—one that seeks to inspire others and create a sustainable, prosperous future for the people.

This statement, focused on shared prosperity and collective consciousness, is the highest form of community service. Senator Lado, now bound to the Iyin Kingdom by an unbreakable cultural tie, will forever be regarded as one of its most critical external development partners.

The Aare Atunluse title, therefore, represents the highest form of appreciation for his developmental humanitarianism, moving beyond mere political or social recognition to a deep, traditional embrace.

In Ekiti, where the person of honour and character ethos guides public life, the recognition of a non-native for such a high title speaks volumes about the sincerity and scale of his support.

Senator Yakubu Lado’s generous hand in funding the Iyin Kingdom’s future has not only earned him a traditional crown but has also cemented his legacy as a true Pan-Nigerian Chief of Development—a humanitarian effort measured in monumental projects and the promise of a better future.

The prominent political figure and businessman, has established a far-reaching reputation that extends well beyond the legislative chambers he once occupied.

While his political career is rooted in Katsina South Senatorial District, his true and enduring developmental impact is consistently demonstrated through his strategic and sustained investments across multiple sectors in Northern Nigeria, primarily driven by the Lado Development Foundation.

His approach to development is holistic, targeting the fundamental challenges that hinder progress in the region: education deficits, youth empowerment, and community infrastructure. This focused, multi-sectoral intervention highlights his commitment to tackling poverty, illiteracy, and underdevelopment at the grassroots level.

Recognising the stark educational challenges facing the North—characterized by low literacy rates and a significant number of out-of-school children—Senator Lado has channeled enormous resources into making education accessible, affordable, and sustainable.

The Lado Development Foundation has positioned itself as one of the leading private investors in human capital development across the Northern states. This foundation scholarship scheme is designed to provide financial relief and educational stability, particularly for students from vulnerable and underrepresented backgrounds in both public and private higher institutions.

The foundation consistently pays billions of Naira for students to write qualifying examinations and to cover tuition fees, extending opportunities across several Northern states.

While Senator Lado’s core development projects are often community-led and executed through his foundation, his political career also reflects a deep understanding of the need for large-scale infrastructure.

As a grassroots politician, Lado has also been credited with facilitating local infrastructure projects in Katsina South, including:

Road Access: Construction and rehabilitation of rural roads and culverts to improve the movement of agricultural produce and connect remote villages to markets, schools, and healthcare centers.

Electrification: Facilitation of power projects and the provision of transformers to extend electricity access to underserved rural areas, enhancing small businesses and quality of life.

Therefore, Senator Yakubu Lado’s developmental projects in Northern Nigeria, channeled primarily through the Lado Development Foundation, represent a robust model of public service extending beyond political cycles.

His commitment is not merely political patronage but a deliberate, structured investment in the region’s most critical sectors—education and youth empowerment.

From sponsoring thousands of students through tertiary institutions to advocating for national rail infrastructure and building local roads, Lado’s efforts paint the picture of a leader whose vision for the North is centered on achieving sustainable human and infrastructural development.

This expansive humanitarian footprint solidifies his standing as a major benefactor and developmental pillar of the Northern Nigerian socio-economic landscape.
