By Williams Danjuma, Gombe

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for the conduct of the bye-election into the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

The commission disclosed this in a statement containing the timetable and schedule of activities for the by-election, which was made available to journalists on Tuesday.

The seat became vacant following the death of the member representing the constituency, Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died at the age of 62 in a hospital in Abuja after a brief illness on Friday, June 12, 2026.

In the release dated August 17, 2026, and signed by Mohorret Bigun, Public Affairs Officer, on behalf of the Gombe State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Umar Mukhtar Gajiram, INEC said the by-election would be conducted in accordance with Section 76(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and other relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.

According to the timetable, the Notice of Election will be published on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The commission said political parties intending to participate in the election are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and 25, 2026.

The commission further stated that the list of nominated candidates would be published on September 8, while campaigns would commence on September 9 and end on September 17, 2026.

INEC urged all political parties to strictly adhere to the timetable and schedule of activities and ensure that their actions are conducted in accordance with the provisions of the law.

The commission also assured stakeholders across the 903 polling units, 31 registration areas and the three Local Government Areas that it would provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.

It reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair and inclusive by-election.

INEC therefore urged eligible voters in the federal constituency to participate actively in the electoral process and exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and responsibly.
